The following programs are designed for employees working in the hospitality and tourism industry and for students seeking to earn professional certificates in this field. Holders of Certificates of Specialization issued by IHTC can apply for credits, when they enroll in the Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree courses.



Ecotourism Management Specialization


The historic character of the Wooden City in the UNESCO World Heritage Triangle in the capital of Suriname, the surrounding villages and old plantations in rural areas, and the indigenous people and descendants of the Maroons living in the pristine rainforest with its amazing flora and fauna offer significant opportunities to develop several forms of Eco and Adventure tourism in Suriname. This 7-course program provides the academic knowledge and practical skills relevant to attract tourists as well as host community residents.

IHTC awards a Certificate of Specialization in Ecotourism Management to students who:

• Meet the College’s academic standards;

• Successfully complete the courses and projects on the Curriculum;

• Successfully complete a 3-month internship in the Tourism industry, or work in this field for 3 months.



Meetings and Special Events Specialization


Festivals and special events are important sources of revenue in the hospitality and tourism industry. Suriname with its unique blend of multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-cultural inhabitants who have kept their own traditions, customs, and cuisine and celebrate their religious holidays together, is a major attraction for people all over the world. This 7-course program provides students with the academic knowledge and practical skills relevant to successful event planning for host community residents and tourists.

Students will earn an AHLEI Certificate of Completion for each individual course. The AHLEI Certificate of Specialization will be awarded to students who:

• Meet the College’s academic standards;

• Complete the required 5 courses successfully;

• Successfully complete a 3-month internship or work in their area of specialization for 3 months.


*Students will receive a framed certificate on completion of a 5-course departmental specialization.
